As previously described, it was an epic drive getting here – nine hours on the road – but seeing the Alps looming in front of you made the journey worthwhile.  And when we finally reached the town of Engelberg and out campsite for the next few days, it was breathtaking.

The photos show what an amazing view we have from out camping plot – mountain views in three directions, with the imposing Mt. Titlis proudly s tending above the rest. What beautiful location for a campsite!

my first ever overseas trip was around the age of 13, when I took a school trip to Switzerland (to Engelberg, to be precise). So it is nice to visit the same town again, many years later, and to share this wonderful location with Michele.

And what a special welcome we a receiving. Today is a big public holiday for Switzerland so there are firework displays taking place across the country. Here I am, sitting out side my tent, watching and listening to fireworks going off all around. It’s magical!

What is equally interesting, is watching a snake of lights making its way down the mountain during the darkness. Apparently, there is a group of hikers making a night-time descent of the mountain with lanterns. Viewed from below, it is reminiscent of the fire-worm in the Viking movie ‘The 13th Warrior’ starring Antonio Banderas.

All in all, a magical start to a stay in Switzerland.
